CAP Canal Trail

Central Arizona Project Canal Trail

It’s a long name for a long trail. However, most of the locals just call it “the CAP.” Or the long-winded ones may call it the Cap Trail. No matter what you call it, this Arizona trail has huge potential. In fact, it is planned to stretch for at least 336 miles. That would easily make it one of the longest bike trails in the United States and the second longest trail in Arizona.

Southwestern Canal Trail

The CAP Trail will run alongside the CAP Canal. Unlike some canal trails, the CAP was never a canal tow trail since this was never a navigable canal but a water-source canal used to disperse water from the Colorado River to thirsty southwestern communities.

Paved Trail Sections

The CAP Canal Trail is scheduled to be a bike trail, hiking trail and an inline skating trail on the  asphalt trail and concrete trail sections. The trail is far from being complete, but one of the longest sections is currently being built and will serve as a model for the rest of the trail. Even at completion, the trail will probably not be completely paved, but it will have some very lengthy paved sections for road bikes, recumbents, Trikkes and inline skates. Since I have not yet had the opportunity to ride this trail, I don’t have a lot of specific details, so please send me comments or use the contact link above to get ahold of me and let me know any information and updates.
