Moselle River Trail: Trier to Piesport

This portion of the Chemin de la Moselle (Moselle Trail)  is one of the most historically significant on these remnants of an important old Roman Road. One of the destinations along the way is Mehring, home of the Villa Rustica, a Roman manor that can still be seen today. Another stunning historic town along this section of the trail is Neumagen, Germany. Neumagen is where the Roman Via Ausonia (an important Roman road that came from Mainz) met the Mosel River and the road that followed the river. A fort was built here under the orders of Emperor Constantine in the 4th Century. As a result, many incredible ruins were excavated including the famous “School Scene Relief” and the Roman wine ship.

Another wonderful trail town is Trittenheim, home to an educational nature trail that teaches the importance & history of local vineyards. In addition to the educational value, you’ll also appreciate the wine tasting that is available, if you show up at the right time.

As with most of the trail, you’ll find an option on both sides of the Mosel River. You really can’t go wrong, although when you look across the river at the beautiful scenery, you’ll always wonder if you chose the right side. Maybe you’ll have to come back and do the other side someday.
