Fox River Trail

A popular Illinois rail-trail, the Fox River Trail is dotted with small towns and many opportunities to visit local cafes, bike shops and souvenir stores. The trail is rather crowded on weekends and even gets pretty steady use on weekdays. Despite the heavy traffic, bird-viewing opportunities abound including frequent sitings of eagles, woodpeckers & herons. Community parks are also common features along the trail providing plenty of opportunities to stop for picnics or even a quick afternoon nap.

The trail is built on the route of the former Chicago, Aurora & Elgin Railroad line. Although many of the remnants of this retired rail line are gone, you will still see some bridges and other reminders of days gone by. One of the best features of this trail is the frequent river crossings on one bridge after another affording trail users plenty of views of the Fox River and its surroundings.

  1. This trail continues North from Crystal Lake until it hits the Illinois-Wisconsin border at Genoa City Wisconsin. There are also multiple connections to the Illinois Prairie Path(IPP) in the St.Charles, Batavia, Aurora area. The Hebron trail also connects to this trail very close to the Northern end at the border. In Aurora the Virgil Gilman trail intersects with this trail also.
