Leave the New York City traffic behind and visit historic Governors Island with its bike paths, walking trails, gardens, hammocks and even a couple restaurants. You will be surprised at the gorgeous views of Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Statue of Liberty. If you want to ride a bike around the island, you’ll find a couple Citi Bike stations on the island. It’s actually a great place for Citi Bike users, because you won’t need to check the bike out for too long to circle the island on a fairly smooth and level bicycle path.
Governors Island is a good choice for a peaceful and relaxing family outing in New York. You can either pack your own picnic on the ferry or get snacks from one of the island vendors. Sturdy and large hammocks are available if you get tired from a day of walking and bicycling. During the weekdays, the island is a fairly tranquil place to visit, while on weekends, it can be a hub of activity. The Manhattan ferry terminal is located near The Battery area right next to the Staten Island Ferry terminal. Once you find the Governors Island Ferry building, go inside to utilize self service ticket kiosks. You will also find a small café and an information service desk. Plan on at least a couple hours for the ferry ride and to explore the island. You could also make a full day out of it, but make sure to leave time to catch the last ferry back to Manhattan.
