Although locals (Boulderites) often refer to Heil Ranch Trail (without an s), it is actually a series of trails including hiking trails, mountain bike trails, and even a through trail that takes trail users to another trail complex called Hall Ranch. The trails of Heil Valley Ranch include: Lichen Loop, Picture Rock Trail, Ponderosa Loop, Wapiti Trail and Wild Turkey Trail.
The main biking trail is a combination of the Wapiti Trail and the Ponderosa Loop trail. This trail is a real confidence booster for young and upcoming mountain bikers because it is just difficult enough to be challenging, but not exceedingly difficult. The trail is a favorite of the Boulder mountain biking community, so the best time to ride it is on weekdays before 3:30. Weekends and late afternoon trail use is very sociable, to say the least. People are very friendly and polite, but you will see lots of bikers and hikers at those times.
Although it seems like a long haul getting to the loop portion of the trail, you will find a nice resting area right at the halfway point. It has a comfortable bench with one of the best views on the Front Range of Colorado. Pack plenty of water and enjoy this Rocky Mountain gem of a trail.
