Today’s trek is fantastic if you seek a little solitude from the tour-group route. You may want to avoid today’s recommended route if it’s raining. As with most sections of the Moselle River Trail (spelled both ways), you have the choice of taking the right bank or left bank of the Mosel River. If you follow our trail map, we’ll take you on the right bank of the Mosel shortly after Cochem. This will lead you on a dirt track past some lesser-known ruins. It will also take you through a dense forest, nice for those hot, sunny days.
You really should consider the detour at Moselkern for a hike to the castle at Burg Elz. It’s a pretty time-consuming detour, but well worth the trip. It’s absolutely stunning.
