Disney World and bike trails: To paraphrase Julie Andrews, “These are a couple of my favorite things.”
So what could be better than spending a couple days at the Magic Kingdom and a couple days on southern Florida bike trails?
My daughter & I did that very thing back in March of 2008. And we had a blast! We spent one day on the West Orange Trail and another day on the Withlacoochee State Trail. (If you think it’s fun to say, you should try riding it.)
This trail is so close to Disney World, you could even spend part of a day in the park and part of a day on the trail. And since there are so many activities available, Dad can ride his bike, son can inline skate, daughter can ride a horse, and Mom can go for a hike. That’s right, there’s something for everyone. And if that’s not enough for you, there’s a butterfly garden just east of the Oakland Outpost on the trail, the Winter Garden Historical Museum in Winter Garden, Florida, and The Oakland Nature Preserve with lots of beautiful fauna & flora. This truly is a wonderful family trail in the heart of Southern Florida tourist country.
And it will someday be even better when this trail becomes part of the Central Florida Loop, a planned 200 mile regional connection trail.
Another nice feature of this trail is the “stations.” These are places on the trail for weary bikers to replenish their stores of vittles and refreshments. Some of the stations also provide bike rentals. We rented our bikes from a nice gentleman at the Killarney Station.
So when you’re down visiting Mickey and the gang, be sure to leave a day for exploring the more mellow, natural side of Florida, too.
