Highlights of Colorado Trail Segment 5
The highlights of Colorado Trail segment 5 include the Lost Creek Wilderness, Kenosha Pass and lots of beautiful leaf viewing in the fall. Another highlight of segment 5 is its moderate terrain. Although mountain biking is not allowed in the wilderness area (about half of the segment), it is possible to bike the western portion of the trail. Either way, it’s a wonderful trail for hiking and offers gorgeous scenery year-round.
Best Time to Hike Segment 5 of Colorado Trail
If you want to enjoy the lovely fall foliage on the trail, September is the best month. However, if it’s possible to do your trail exploration on weekdays, that would be the optimal time. Fall weekends up at Kenosha Pass can be incredibly crowded. The good news is that this is one of the most accessible segments of the Colorado Trail. The trailhead for both segment 5 and Colorado Trail segment 6 is right off of highway 285, a major artery out of Denver. Just take hwy 285 southwest from Denver until you reach Kenosha Pass and there is the Colorado Trail trailhead.
