It was a sunny Sunday afternoon, the day before Labor Day, and the temperatures were soaring into the 90s down in Denver, Colorado.
That was the first wonderful surprise about the Mineral Belt Loop Trail up in Leadville, Colorado. It was still sunny, but the high on the trail that day was 70°. It was perfect weather for a bike ride.
The second wonderful surprise was the ease with which everyone seemed to be riding this trail. After all, Leadville’s altitude is 10,152 feet. I would have thought everyone would have been wheezing and gasping for air at that altitude. On the contrary, everyone seemed to be having no trouble pedaling their way around the 12.5 mile loop. I saw everything from octogenarians on mountain bikes to a father with not one but two young boys on his bike. They all had smiles, and they all seemed to be having a great time riding their bikes on this great mountain trail.
